Rear View Mirror: 1955 Ford Thunderbird
These days, Corvette is Chevy’s flagship, and Thunderbird is in dry-dock – a victim of slow sales. Sixty years ago, it was a different story. When Thunderbird made its début in 1955, Corvette was teetering on the brink of extinction.

Rear View Mirror: 1957 Ford Ranchero
Half car, half truck – the idea seems logical enough. In these days of sport utes/station wagon hybrids, we’re used to mixed breeds. In the Fifties, though, this was radical stuff. Ranchero wasn’t the first to plow this ground in the states; Hudson and Studebaker had done so decades before. But, buyers weren’t ready then, and the concept crumbled. When Ford revisited the idea in 1957, people listened with open ears – and wallets.

Rear View Mirror: 1975 Chevy Monte Carlo
Less logical was the growth of personal luxury coupes. Neither lean nor green, the big two doors nonetheless sold strongly throughout the decade.

Rear View Mirror:1968 Mercury Park Lane
Period ads lauded the “simulated walnut tone paneling” not only for its looks, but also for its practicality, as a stopper of door dings. Still, the woodie look was more about fashion than function, seeking to add a dash of cosmetic class to the slab sided body of the big Mercs.

Rear View Mirror: 1956 Buick Century
We think of muscle cars as being creations of the Sixties, but in a broader sense, the idea of putting a bigger motor in a smaller car had been around for years before Detroit’s decade of thunder. One of the Fifties’ finest examples was found in the Buick Century. The Century name traces back to the 30’s, when Buick used it to highlight the triple digit top speed of the new series.
